Bad termination error; cluster compute

$

I'm running a comsol model on a cluster using the syntax:

comsol -clustersimple -nn 5 -f hostfile batch -inputfile <filename.mph> -study std1 -outputfile <ofilename.mph>

This runs if the number of domain elements are such that the memory required does not cross that which is available on a single node. Although I get an error saying Error on node 1, Error on node 2, ..., the outputfile contains results that I believe are complete.

If I run the case with increased number of domain elements such that the memory required is more than that available on a single node (the reason for which I would like to use cluster computing), the simulation runs for 20 or so minutes and ends with a bad termination error with Exit code: 9. I've attached a screenshot of the error. Ideas and suggestions? I'm using a FNL of course.

Thanks and regards,

Transfer a diffusion flux in a solid electrode to an porous electrode

Hello all together,

I have a Problem, which maybe have been discussed several times in a way here, but not for this special case. I am simulating a 3D model of an anode in a battery. The 3D model particles are surrounded with binder which contains active material to connect the anode particles with the conductor and also simulate the porosity around the particles in the electrolyte. The binder is modeled as a porous electrode.
Is it possible to connect in a solid the transport of diluted species module(cs=Lithium-concentration) with the diffusion module of a porous electrode(lithium-ion-battery module)? So that I have a Lithium-flux out of an solid electrode into a porous electrode where it is transported further? And how ? So that the lithium-diffusion of the solid electrode is connected to the porous electrode which surrounds it. Of course the other way round as well.

Thanks, Greetings Daniel

Plasticity in Multibody Dynamics

$

Hello,

I want to implement a rotating ring and a cube, that gets in contact with the ring and adds friction. This should happen with plastic deformation. So far I understand that one cannot combine plasticity in solid mechanics with multibody dynamics via multiphysics but with an attechment node and joint. But I have problems with assigning the domains to both solid mechanics and multibody dynamics at the same time. So my question is, how do I assign the domains that I have rotation (multibody dynamics) and plastic deformation (solid mechanics) in my model?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Rigid connector alternative for rigid body solid mechanics

Hello, I noticed that once i apply rigid domain to my 2D model in solid mechanics, the rigid connector becomes invalid. What is another way to keep the solid fixed (not let it move in x and y direction) but allow it to rotate? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Finding force within an electrical field using electrostatics

Hi,

I am modeling a mems resonator. The resonator has electrodes attached to it (rectangle bars in image). Underneath the electrodes are another set of electrodes which are fixed. Electrodes attached to the resonator (mass) are movable (top electrodes). I am applying a positive and negative dc and ac voltages to the fixed electordes. Thus producing an electric field. This electric field is suppose to push the movable elctrodes, which are right above the fixed ones, away from the fixed electrodes (out of place displacement). Unfortunetly this is not happeing. I have tried various changes to my model. I am getting various errors.
I have also included an air domain (with and without it; i am getting errors). When i chose the air as the material, it asked me for young's modulus and possion's ratio. This doesnt make sense to me, but i think the problem is deeper. If someone can help me getting this simulation running that would be greatly appreaciated. Thanks in advance.

Electron Beam Induced Current in Silicon

The below post is related to an archived discussion

Hello there!

As said in the title, and in relation with the above unanswered article, I am also trying to model an electron beam induced current inside a silicon thin layer (1um). With high energy, the electrons hit the bulk, creating e-/h+ pairs. Those are drifted apart by two means; the internal doping, and the applied bias (which naturally creates a current, also). The total current is the the applied one, plus the one induced by the incoming electrons.

The problem is that I can't seem to find a multiphysics node coupling the (cpt) node with the (semi) node. Is there another way to do it? With a mathematical event node?

Please find my file attached. Don't hesitate to ask questions if something is not clear about it.

Electromagnetic simulation considering magnetic and electric effects

Hi, I've been trying to model a grounding system submitted to a current impulse on time domain. I can simulate that situation employing the Electric Currents physics from AC/DC module. However, that physics disregards magnetic effects. Next, I studied the Magnetic fields interfaces, but in this case I found difficults on modelling current direction, as the current must be assigned into a coil. In the Magnetic and Electric Fields physics, it is possible to define terminals for electric current input and output. But in this case, it seems not possible to perform time dependent simulations, as the 'time dependent' is regarded as a 'custom study', and it is said that this study must be settled up manually.

Anyone knows how can I model this problem on COMSOL? Is it possible to employ FFT to connect time inputs and outputs to a frequency domain study? Can Magnetic and Electric fields physics be ajusted for a time dependent study?

Help with Periodic Boundary Conditions

Hi,

I'm trying to model a 20-turn toroidal inductor with a rectangular cross-section, using the mf interface. I'd like to measure the induced current flow and potential drop across the inductor due to a certain background magnetic field, as well as (at a later time) connecting this to an electrical circuit.

The full model is very difficult to mesh, so I'd like to use the symmetry that the inductor admits. I'm trying to use the periodic condition that the mf interface has, but to choose the boundaries for this node, I have to unselect the inductor wire from the mf interface. This means the induced current is not calculated, as the wire is not part of the mf physics domain. How can I properly implement the periodic boundary condition so I can model the inductor and find the induced current? I read something about sector symmetry for electric current physics, but the article was unclear about how to specifically implement this feature.

Unfortunately, explaining this problem is difficult, so I've attached the application as well as the STL file for a single turn of the inductor. Hopefully this makes it more clear. If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated, or attach articles or examples that clearly illustrate how to work this.

Best, Henry

Inlet flow boundaries inside the domain

I would like to evaluate the air flow inside an ice rink. So I try to define the ventilation inlet like a boundary surface somewhere in the top of the domain. But the boundaries are inside the domain and not in the wall of the ceiling. I want to skip the duct system, but when I try to define the inlet boundary in the physics sector , it gives the error that the boundary is not applicable. Could you help me to define them?

Dear all,

I want to creat a surface plot from 3 derived values. It would be something similar to what Jeff did with height expression (in the refernce thread) , but instead of x and y I want to use global variables. Thank you in advance for your answer.

Ray power calculation in a section of tapered fiber

$

Hi

I have an optical fiber simulation running on Comsol 5.1. I have a fiber with a tapered end and am using the Ray Optics module with rays tracing showing rays propagating along the fiber. I would like to calculate the power/transmittance in the cone at the tapered end.

How would I go about doing this?

I have used the Deposited Ray Power node to find transmittance with the fiber having an open end because it uses boundaries only, but I don't know how to do it with a cone end as this is a domain. I think it would have something to do with a volumetric integration. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Leaning Comsol

Hello, i just started to learn how to use Comsol and I have a question. I started with a simple simulation: Two steel plates on the top and bottom, some flexible material in between. The top plate moves down and deforms the flexible material in middle, the bottom one is fixed.

Problem: While the flexible material stays in fixed contact with the top plate, it is pushed over the edge of the bottom plate. I would like to fix the flexible material also to the down plate. Or to say in a different way, the defomation should be symmetric.

In the attached picture one can see what i mean: while the top interface is fixed, the bottom one changes.

How can I fix that? I used this tutorial as starting point: https://www.comsol.de/video/modeling-hyperelastic-materials-using-comsol-multiphysics

Thanks for your help, Markus

Edit: Under Solid Mechanics, in the Free node, the selection is active - it is "overridden" by the contact. Can this be the problem?
